A career path in music can be a difficult one. From the hobbyist to the industry professional, those who choose this path have to find a way to showcase their skills and talent. Between performance and distribution, there are many ways that musicians share their passions while also making a living.
Bomp is a live-streaming app built for musicians, producers, and DJs. The objective is to provide a digital platform highlighting musical performance, education, and social networking. While the apps main function is live-streaming, it also contains features that allow collaboration between users and midi screen sharing capabilities.
This project was awarded Silver by The One Club San Diego and Bronze by The World Brand Society for student digital product categories.
In my research I found that many apps that focused on music streaming didn't offer direct tipping options for fan support. This insight helped my decision making in ideating the key features for Bomp.
Three interviews were conducted based on the interviewees experience within streaming apps. The questions pertained to their experience as streamers, viewers, and musicians. These insights helped me define our user personas and provided quotes for card sorting.
Sarah is a trained musician who transitioned into DJing and Producing. She’s invested alot of her time and money in her craft. She performs almost every weekend but between gigs she likes to make her own music at her home built studio.
She wants to strengthen her online engagement but is not interested in learning about broadcasting softwares. Sarah needs a way to stream when she’s traveling primarily through a mobile app.
Julian is a self taught guitarist who loves to jam at open-mic events. He has never been professionally taught but he has a skilled ear and finds online tutorials to be the most affective learning tools. He plays music while he multi-tasks
Julian wants to learn how to use his new equipment. He isn’t tech savvy and would like to learn and stream from his mobile. He is tired of his usual playlists and wants to play new live music at home
Two personas were built based on the lifestyles, goals, wants and needs of the interviewees who would model Bomp's user demographic. In ideation and design, defining users helped me organize the user flows and guide my decision making.
Using quotes from the interviews, I entered the wants, needs, and pain-points of the participants onto Miro app. Another group of participants were asked to sort these cards into groups and name them. With this research, I was able to visualize screens based on favorable features through a users perspective.
This user path became the structure of Bomp's wire-framing process and supported the prototype design decisions.
The goal in creating the path and aligning the features was to make sure customized streaming was easy and delightful.
